Machu Qullqa, Archaeological site in Cusco Region, Peru.

Machu Qullqa is an archaeological site in the Cusco Region featuring stone structures arranged across 14 terraces at an elevation of 3,850 meters above the Urubamba River valley. The remains show a sophisticated system of storage chambers that the Inca used to manage supplies for surrounding communities.

During the Inca Empire, Machu Qullqa served as a strategic storage facility to manage agricultural products for surrounding settlements in the Sacred Valley. The site was positioned at this elevation to take advantage of climate conditions that provided ideal storage conditions for keeping food preserved.

The name comes from Quechua, meaning old storehouse, reflecting what the Inca built here to keep food and goods safe. You can still observe how storage chambers were carefully positioned within the terraced layout.

Visitors should wear sturdy hiking shoes and bring warm clothing, as the elevation and weather conditions can be challenging. Water and supplies are available near the parking area, along with local shops selling handcrafted goods.

The site now features a modern zip line that runs through the ancient terraces, offering visitors a thrilling perspective of the stone structures from above. This unexpected blend of historical preservation and contemporary recreation makes it a distinctive experience.
