Arco Chino, Paifang gate in Barrio Chino, Lima District, Peru.
Arco Chino is a red and golden archway located at the intersection of Ucayali and Andahuaylas streets in the Chinese neighborhood. The 8-meter-tall and 13-meter-wide structure is flanked by two marble lion sculptures, each standing 1.80 meters high.
The Chinese community donated this arch in 1971 to mark 150 years of Peru's independence from Spain. The gift recognized an important moment in the community's connection to the city.
The inscription on the Capon Street-facing side displays a Confucian phrase about human equality and dignity. This message reflects values that remain important to the community that gathers here.
The gate sits at a busy intersection and is easy to locate in the Chinese neighborhood. Visitors should watch for traffic when exploring the area or taking photographs.
Architects Kuoway Ruiz Dillon and Carlos Lock Sing designed the gate while artist Wa Kong Chang created the decorative elements. This collaboration between different cultures remains visible in every detail of the work.
