Southern Cone, Geographic subregion in southern South America.

The Southern Cone is a geographic subregion in southern South America, stretching from the Tropic of Capricorn to Cape Horn. It covers areas with temperate climates and varied landscapes including mountains, plains, and coastlines.

During the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, millions of Europeans arrived and settled here, shaping the population and society. These waves of immigration transformed Argentina and Chile, bringing new languages, customs, and trades.

The name comes from the triangular shape that tapers southward and ends at the tip of America. Visitors today notice the cafés, theaters, and architecture that recall European cities and remain visible in daily life.

The Pampas continue to produce wheat, corn, and beef, while the Andes to the west offer conditions for hiking and skiing. Travelers should pay attention to different seasons, as the north can be subtropical and the south subarctic.

In some areas of the Atacama Desert in northern Chile, no rain falls for centuries, making it the driest place outside the poles. Astronomers value this sky for telescopes, as the air holds almost no moisture.
