Mar de las Pampas, human settlement in Argentina
Mar de las Pampas is a small coastal locality in Villa Gesell Partido, Argentina. The settlement is surrounded by tall pine trees and various vegetation, with long wide beaches that remain uncrowded and ideal for walking or relaxing.
The settlement began in 1957 when a group purchased coastal land and planted trees to prevent sand dune erosion and preserve the landscape. Over decades, a planned community developed with paths designed to follow the natural terrain rather than impose straight lines.
The name reflects the wide pampas landscape covered with trees and vegetation that shapes the coastline. Houses and paths wind through the greenery in ways that respect the natural terrain, creating a bohemian character where visitors and residents embrace a slower pace of life.
The locality is about 10 kilometers south of Villa Gesell and accessible by local bus or rental car. Sandy paths connect the scattered houses, shops, and restaurants, making it easy to navigate on foot while enjoying the relaxed pace.
The settlement was originally called Mar Azul after the sea color, but the name changed to Mar de las Pampas to reflect the wide grasslands and forest coverage created through decades of tree planting. This name shift mirrors the transformation from bare coast to wooded refuge.
