Torreón del Monje, Gothic building in Mar del Plata, Argentina

Torreón del Monje is a tower-like building with an octagonal stone design rising from Punta Piedras rocks and offering ocean views. The complex includes multiple event halls, a restaurant overlooking the water, and beach facilities with loungers and umbrellas.

A wealthy businessman named Ernesto Tornquist commissioned architect Carlos Nordmann to build this structure in 1904. The name changed over time, with earlier names being Torre Pueyrredón or Belvedere.

The building carries a legendary tale about a soldier named Alvar Rodriguez and an indigenous woman called Mariña from centuries past. This story remains woven into how locals and visitors understand the place today.

The site is open year-round and functions as both a restaurant and event venue with ocean views. Visitors should prepare for steep paths and uneven terrain since the building sits on coastal rocks.

In the 1920s the building housed a pigeon shooting club that shut down after dead birds washed up on the nearby beach. This strange episode remains part of the place's history.
