Terraza Palace, Rationalist apartment building in Mar del Plata, Argentina.
Terraza Palace is a rationalist apartment building in Mar del Plata with eight floors and integrated balconies and windows arranged perpendicular to its main facade. It contains forty housing units with natural lighting through staggered balconies and double-height courtyards that improve air circulation throughout.
Architect Antonio Bonet Castellana completed this residential structure in 1957 as Mar del Plata was beginning its urban growth. It was built during a period when such modern residential buildings were still uncommon in this seaside city.
The building shows mid-20th century living culture through its functional design and shared spaces built into the structure. This layout reflects how residents lived and used their homes during that era.
The seaside location with ocean views makes this a notable landmark visible from various points across the city. Keep in mind that this is a private residential building and can only be viewed from outside.
Local residents nicknamed the building 'the typewriter' because of its distinctive shape and structure. Two BFK chairs positioned at its entrance eventually found their way into New York's Museum of Modern Art collection.
