Mar del Plata Naval Base, Naval base in Mar del Plata, Argentina.
Mar del Plata Naval Base is a military facility on Argentina's Atlantic coast with docks, submarine shelters, and maintenance buildings. The site includes barracks, administrative offices, workshops, and berths for several types of vessels.
The site began as a coastal defense point in the 19th century and later became headquarters for Argentina's submarine fleet. During World War II, it served as a monitoring post for ship movements in the South Atlantic.
The Submarine Force Command Museum at the site holds flags, ship bells, and exhibits about Argentina's naval past. Visitors can view torpedos, navigation instruments, and personal items from former crews.
Access to the grounds is limited to certain days and hours, with visitors needing prior clearance from naval administration. Tours last about an hour and focus on the museum and publicly accessible outdoor areas.
After the war ended, German submarine crews surrendered their boats here, and parts of those vessels are now on display in the museum. Some technical components were later integrated into Argentine submarines that remained in service into the 1980s.
