Museum of Contemporary Art of Mar del Plata, Contemporary art museum in Mar del Plata, Argentina

The Museum of Contemporary Art of Mar del Plata (MAR) occupies a 7,000-square-metre concrete building by Estudio Monoblock, made of cubic volumes over two floors. Fixed and mechanical stairs lead to the upper level, which holds three exhibition rooms: two of 20 x 20 metres and one of 20 x 30 metres, all 9 metres high and fitted with digital projectors, lighting and sound systems.

The museum opened on 27 December 2013, inaugurated by Buenos Aires province governor Daniel Scioli and Jorge Telerman, president of the province's Cultural Institute. Its building was designed by Estudio Monoblock, which won the national preliminary-design competition held by the provincial Ministry of Infrastructure. The opening exhibition, La ola POP, was curated by Rodrigo Alonso.

The museum opened with "La ola POP", a show curated by Rodrigo Alonso on 1960s Argentine pop art, with works by Alberto Greco, Jorge de la Vega, Rómulo Macció, Antonio Seguí, Edgardo Giménez, Delia Cancela and Antonio Berni. Later shows included an audiovisual on Jorge Bergoglio, inaugurated 15 March 2014, and "El Museo de los mundos imaginarios", on Jorge Luis Borges, with over 40 artists.

The three exhibition rooms are on the upper floor, reached by fixed and mechanical stairs. Two rooms measure 20 by 20 metres and one 20 by 30 metres, all 9 metres high, with digital projectors, lighting and sound systems. The building has 7,000 square metres of built surface on two levels.

For the museum's opening, Marta Minujín built an 11-metre-high sea lion from more than 50,000 alfajor wrappers inflated with air, shown as part of the inaugural exhibition "La ola POP" curated by Rodrigo Alonso.
