Avellaneda, Port city in Greater Buenos Aires, Argentina
Avellaneda is a port city in Avellaneda Partido in Greater Buenos Aires, Argentina. Several bridges cross the Riachuelo River and link the area directly to the capital on the opposite shore.
The settlement began in 1731 as Puerto del Riachuelo, a port on the river. Administrative status changed to city in 1895, and in 1904 it took its current name after Argentine statesman Nicolás Avellaneda.
Two football clubs, Racing Club and Club Atlético Independiente, have shaped local life for more than a century. Their stadiums draw fans from across the metropolitan area and turn match days into large community gatherings.
The university in the city offers a range of study programs and is accessible by public transport from Buenos Aires. Neighborhoods near the riverfront are busiest during daytime, while residential areas further inland remain quieter.
The city hosts large industrial facilities for textile production, meat processing and metal working along the riverfront. Grain storage and a refinery complete the industrial profile of this working town on the southern fringe.
