Reserva ecológica Ciudad Universitaria, Nature reserve at Ciudad Universitaria campus, Buenos Aires, Argentina
The Reserva Ecologica at Ciudad Universitaria spans 21 hectares and contains three distinct natural zones: pampas grassland, humid forest, and wetland habitat. These areas connect together and extend toward the Rio de la Plata estuary at the city's edge.
The area was created in the 1960s through land reclamation for university expansion and initially remained bare and unused. Over time, native plants and animals naturally colonized the abandoned ground, gradually forming the ecosystem visible today.
The reserve serves as a working space where University of Buenos Aires students and researchers actively study environmental science and conduct field projects. It shows how education and nature conservation can coexist within an urban campus setting.
The reserve is accessible by bus lines 28, 33, 37, 42, 45, 107, and 160, or by the Belgrano Norte train to Ciudad Universitaria station. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear as paths cross through different habitats and the ground can be muddy or uneven depending on recent weather.
The reserve hosts more than 1000 species, with about 70 percent of all bird species found in Buenos Aires present here. This concentration makes it a surprising hotspot for wildlife watching in the middle of the city.
