La República Argentina, Bronze sculpture at Escuela Técnica Raggio, Buenos Aires, Argentina.
La República Argentina is a bronze sculpture at Escuela Técnica Raggio, depicting a female figure wearing a Phrygian cap alongside two men representing farming and industry. The male figures hold grain and a locomotive to symbolize these economic sectors.
The work was created by French sculptor Jean-Baptiste Hugues for the Argentine Pavilion at the 1889 Paris Universal Exposition. This was made specifically for Argentina's presentation at the World's Fair near the Eiffel Tower.
The sculpture shows workers from farming and industry, symbolizing Argentina's economic strength. These figures stand beside a central female figure and reflect the importance of these sectors to the nation.
The sculpture is located on the grounds of Escuela Técnica Raggio in the northern area of Buenos Aires and is accessible to visitors. It is good to check in advance whether the school campus allows public visits during certain times.
The original plaster model of this sculpture was donated to the National Museum of Fine Arts in 1946 and remains preserved there. This model reveals the artistic process and planning that went into the final bronze work.
