Clandestine Center of Detention, Torture and Extermination, Historical detention center in Núñez, Buenos Aires, Argentina
The center occupies a former naval complex along Libertador Avenue and consists of several buildings that now house exhibition rooms. The compound preserves different areas where detainees were held during the dictatorship years.
The naval academy was seized by the military junta in 1976 and converted into a secret detention facility. After democracy returned in 1983, families and human rights advocates fought for decades to transform the site into a public memorial.
The site serves as a memorial space that honors victims and survivors of state terror during the dictatorship years. Local communities and human rights groups gather here regularly to hold vigils and educational events.
Guided visits are led by trained volunteers who help visitors navigate the different sections and understand their significance. Access is free of charge, though booking ahead is recommended as group sizes are limited.
Some rooms remain exactly as they were found when the facility closed in 1983, including metal bed frames and barred windows. These unaltered spaces allow visitors to see firsthand the conditions prisoners endured during their confinement.
