Área de protección ambiental Rincón de Franquía, Environmental protection area at the triple border of Uruguay, Argentina and Brazil.
The Área de protección ambiental Rincón de Franquía is a protected nature reserve situated where Uruguay, Argentina, and Brazil meet, covering roughly 1,150 hectares. It contains riverside forests, wetlands, and diverse ecosystems shaped by South American plants and animals.
The protected area was established in 2004 after local residents started a project to safeguard riverside forests that were facing degradation. This founding effort marked the beginning of formal conservation in this border region.
The area is managed together by GRUPAMA, an organization that brings together residents, local authorities, and community members in joint decision-making. This collaborative approach shapes how people in the region work to care for their natural surroundings.
Access the reserve through Route 3 at kilometer 625, where basic lodging options including cabins and camping are available at Parador Los Pinos. Bring weather-appropriate clothing suited for wet conditions and plan time to explore the different habitats at your own pace.
The reserve hosts about 223 bird species, which represents half of all birds found in Uruguay, making it a significant destination for bird watchers. Additionally, 15 mammal species and numerous endangered animals make their home here.
