Rocha Department

The department of Rocha extends over 10,551 square kilometers along the Atlantic coast, featuring stretches of beaches and coastal lagoons.

Following the territorial reorganization in 1880, Rocha separated from Maldonado Department, becoming the newest of Uruguay's nineteen administrative regions.

The population of 68,088 inhabitants maintains traditions through local festivals, while engaging in cattle ranching and agricultural activities across the region.

The department connects to other regions through Route 9 and Route 15, with regular bus services operating between major cities and Montevideo.

Natural reserves in Rocha shelter diverse wildlife, including sea lions at Cabo Polonio and migratory birds near Laguna Merín.
