Faro Cabo Santa María, Lighthouse and scenic viewpoint in La Paloma, Uruguay
The circular masonry tower of Faro Cabo Santa María rises 30 meters high with a red dome and white radial stripes on the Atlantic coast.
Construction began in 1870 with materials shipped from Montevideo, and after a tragic collapse in 1872, the lighthouse was finally inaugurated on September 1, 1874.
Italian immigrant Don Ciro Pini, who contributed design drawings to the project, became the first lighthouse keeper and settled with his family in the area.
Visitors can climb 143 steps to reach the top from Thursday to Sunday between 10:00 AM and 5:00 PM, with a one-hour lunch break at 1:00 PM.
The lighthouse marks the official establishment date of La Paloma beach resort and maintains a luminous range of 20.5 nautical miles across the Atlantic Ocean.
