Sea Museum, Marine museum in El Tesoro, Uruguay.
The Sea Museum is a museum in El Tesoro housing more than 5,000 specimens of marine life spread across four halls, including whale skeletons, sea urchins, starfish, and shells. The rooms also display objects from the history of coastal settlements and bathing culture.
The museum was established in 1996 and displays historical maritime objects, including a vintage bathing machine that women used in the early 1900s. This collection preserves memories of the early days of bathing culture along Uruguay's coast.
The Beach Resort section shows how coastal living and tourism changed in Uruguay through photographs and objects on display. You can see how people spent their leisure time by the sea in earlier times.
The museum is located at the intersection of Romildo Risso and Pedro Aicardi and is open daily from 10:30 AM to 5:30 PM. Visitors should allow time to move through all four halls and additional exhibition areas at a comfortable pace.
The museum also houses an Insectarium with 38,000 specimens, mainly beetles, displayed alongside the marine exhibitions. This extensive insect collection is an unexpected addition to the building's marine focus.
