Casapueblo, Hotel and museum in Punta Ballena, Uruguay
Casapueblo is a white multistory building along the Atlantic coast that functions as both a hotel and museum. Curved walls and terraces extend across multiple levels, offering numerous vantage points overlooking the sea.
Carlos Páez Vilaró began building a small workshop in 1960 and expanded it over four decades into this complex. During construction, the artist lived and worked here while continuously adding new rooms and levels.
The architecture draws from Mediterranean villages and African mud buildings that the artist encountered during his travels. White walls reflect sunlight and create bright interiors where visitors move between artworks and ocean vistas.
The site sits about 13 kilometers (8 miles) from Punta del Este and opens at 10 in the morning until sunset. Visitors can choose between a museum visit and a hotel stay, with guided tours available through the different rooms.
The artist held a daily ceremony for years, celebrating sunset with poetry and music. Staff continue this tradition today, inviting visitors to experience the moment together with sounds and spoken words.
