Volcán Quehuar

Volcán Quehuar, Stratovolcano in Salta Province, Argentina.

Volcán Quehuar is a dormant stratovolcano in Salta Province reaching 6,140 meters (20,144 feet) with a broad crater visible at its summit. It stands within the Nevados de los Pastos Grandes range as a defined volcanic cone that dominates the surrounding landscape.

The Inca constructed an 80-square-meter platform at the summit, first documented in modern times in 1974. This structure reflects ritual activities that took place high in the mountains during the Inca period.

The volcano takes its name from the Quehuare people, who lived south of Cusco and held the status of Incas by privilege. This ancient connection to a specific ethnic group shapes how locals understand and refer to the mountain today.

Access to this volcano is via National Route 51, with September through November providing the best conditions for climbing attempts. High altitude and variable weather are key factors to consider when planning a visit to the summit.

Archaeological excavations at the summit uncovered frozen human remains from Inca ceremonial sacrifices along with textiles and ceramic objects. These discoveries reveal that ritual practices extended to the very highest points of the landscape.
