The Law School is a rectangular building with marble staircases, Venetian stucco handrails, and decorative wall and ceiling paintings throughout its interior. The spaces feature crafted details that reflect the refined appearance of an established educational institution.
The institution was founded in 1900 as the first law school in southern Brazil, initially operating in borrowed classrooms from a teacher training school. It moved to its own building in 1910 after becoming established as a major educational center in the region.
The building displays stained glass windows representing Justice, Doctrine, and Science that reflect the academic mission. A large mural by artist Ado Malagoli decorates the auditorium and adds artistic depth to the interior.
The building is a protected heritage site and serves as an important stop for visitors interested in the architectural history of Porto Alegre. Information about visiting should be confirmed in advance since the location remains an active academic campus.
The building was designed by Hermann Otto Menchen and drew inspiration from the Palais du Rhin, a French palace. This European architectural reference makes it an unusual example for an early 20th century southern Brazilian institution.
