The institution was founded in 1900 as the first law school in southern Brazil, initially operating in borrowed classrooms from a teacher training school. It moved to its own building in 1910 after becoming established as a major educational center in the region.

The building displays stained glass windows representing Justice, Doctrine, and Science that reflect the academic mission. A large mural by artist Ado Malagoli decorates the auditorium and adds artistic depth to the interior.
