The Faculdade de Direito da Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul is one of the 27 teaching units of UFRGS and the oldest law school in Rio Grande do Sul. It began in 1900 in two first-floor rooms of the Escola Normal building, at the corner of Duque de Caxias and Marechal Floriano Peixoto streets, before moving to its own seat. It offers the undergraduate law course and several postgraduate programmes in the field.

Founded as the Faculdade Livre de Direito de Porto Alegre, it opened on 4 May 1900 in two first-floor rooms of the Escola Normal at the corner of Duque de Caxias and Marechal Floriano Peixoto streets. Its first class had twelve students, ten of whom graduated in 1904; teachers taught without pay until 1906. The Union recognised it as an official teaching establishment by Decree No. 4,875 of 6 July 1903.

The law school's building, inaugurated in 1910, was designed by German-Brazilian architect Hermann Otto Menchen, who modelled it on the Palais du Rhin in Strasbourg. Its interior holds stained-glass windows and a large mural by Ado Malagoli in the auditorium. The faculty began in 1900 in two rooms of the Escola Normal before moving to this purpose-built home.

The law school occupies a building in the historic centre of Porto Alegre, near the corner of Duque de Caxias and Marechal Floriano Peixoto streets, where its first classes were held in 1900. It remains an active academic unit of UFRGS, so visits should be arranged in advance with the faculty.

The first class, on 5 May 1900, was taught by Plínio Casado, professor of Constitutional Law, in two rooms of the Escola Normal building. In 1906 students staged the school's first rebellion, marching with torches because they were not invited to greet visiting president Afonso Pena; state president Borges de Medeiros then let them salute him.
