Biblioteca Pública, Public library in Porto Alegre, Brazil.
Biblioteca Pública do Estado occupies an eclectic building at the corner of Rua Riachuelo and Rua General Câmara, begun in 1912 to a design by Affonso Hebert and inaugurated on 7 September 1922. Its facade displays busts of the Positivist Calendar, one of only three such monuments in the world. Inside, Carrara marble columns with capitals by João Vicente Friedrichs frame the doorways, and decorative paintings by Fernando Schlater and marble and bronze sculptures by Alfred Adloff, Eduardo de Sá and Giuseppe Gaudenzi adorn the rooms.
Created by Provincial Law no. 724 of 14 April 1871, which funded book purchases and librarian and porter posts, the library opened on 21 January 1877 in the old Liceu Dom Afonso building at Duque de Caxias and Marechal Floriano. Its first director was Fausto de Freitas e Castro; by 1895 it held 8,000 volumes. The current building was begun on 7 February 1912 to Affonso Hebert's design and inaugurated on 7 September 1922, during the Independence Centenary.
The facade carries busts of the months of Auguste Comte's Positivist Calendar, one of only three such monuments in the world; the months of Moses, Homer and Archimedes are kept in the director's room. The library is named after no single writer, but many of its directors were authors, including Augusto Meyer and Jayme Caetano Braun.
The building stands at the corner of Rua Riachuelo and Rua General Câmara, near the Teatro São Pedro, the Metropolitan Cathedral and the Palácio Piratini. The historic building was closed for infrastructure and façade works from 2007 to 2013, when services moved temporarily to the Casa de Cultura Mario Quintana.
The eclectic facade carries one of the most complete illustrations of the Positivist Calendar, with marble busts of its tutelary figures between the windows; only three such monuments exist in the world. Three months are missing from the facade — Moses, Homer and Archimedes — and their busts stand in the director's office.
