Solar dos Câmara, Palace in Porto Alegre, Brazil

Solar dos Câmara is a two-storey Portuguese colonial mansion built between 1818 and 1824 at Rua Duque de Caxias 968, later remodelled in neoclassical taste in 1874. Its facade has windows with wrought-metal balconies and relief ornament, and a large platibanda once held glazed ceramic statues of the Continents, now kept inside. The wooded garden has statues and a fountain; inside, the Salão José Lewgoy has a large chandelier, velvet curtains and carved wood door frames.

The building was created between 1818 and 1824 as the residence of José Feliciano Fernandes Pinheiro, the first president of São Pedro do Rio Grande do Sul Province. It stands among the oldest surviving homes from that period in the city.

The name comes from the Correia da Câmara family, who owned the house from 1851 until 1975. Its last resident, Armando Pereira Corrêa da Câmara, was a senator and the first rector of PUCRS. Since 1993 the mansion has housed a cultural centre run by the state legislature, with a memorial, a library and the Escola do Legislativo.

Visiting happens through guided tours that give access to the different rooms and their features. It is worth checking the opening times in advance, as these can vary by season.

In 1874, the mansion received extensive interior renovation that added velvet upholstery, chandeliers, carpets, and crystal elements. These pieces still shape how the rooms look today.
