Casa da Pedra, Creative residential building in Guarujá, Brazil.
Casa da Pedra is a creative residential building in Guarujá covered with colorful mosaics made from recycled ceramic pieces and standing about 26 feet (8 meters) tall. The structure features narrow passageways, arched ceilings, and an integrated rooftop garden with many plant species.
Construction began in 1985 when Estevão Silva da Conceição started transforming existing wooden shacks into an innovative residence. The project evolved over three decades of continuous work, showcasing a personal vision of sustainable building.
The house takes its name from the stone and mosaic materials that define its character. Visitors and locals recognize it as a testament to transforming everyday waste materials into something creative and meaningful.
To visit the building, advance reservations are required through the Nova Paraisópolis organization. Tours allow you to explore the interior rooms and different levels as well as the attached garden space.
The walls are covered with thousands of found objects including industrial materials, broken tiles, and bottle caps that create an unconventional artwork. These collected items were gathered over decades and transform the spaces into a personal gallery of recycling and invention.
