Liberdade, Asian cultural district in São Paulo, Brazil
Liberdade is a neighbourhood in São Paulo, Brazil, known for its Asian influences and location close to downtown. The streets are decorated with red lanterns and offer a variety of Asian restaurants, shops, and cultural institutions.
The area was once called Campo da Forca and served as an execution site. From 1912 onward, Japanese immigrants arrived here and transformed the character of the district.
The name of the district means freedom, a reminder of the public squares that once hosted gatherings after the abolition of slavery.
The metro line runs through the neighbourhood with two stations nearby. Weekend markets offer a good opportunity to discover local products and get to know the surroundings.
A tall red gate marks the entrance and recalls Japanese temples. The museum of Japanese immigration preserves objects and documents from the first decades of settlement.
