Praça da República, Central square in República District, São Paulo, Brazil
Praça da República is a rectangular square featuring paved pathways, green spaces, mature trees, and numerous benches set among modernist and historic buildings. The plaza combines architectural styles from different periods, reflecting the district's urban development.
The square was originally called Largo dos Curros in the 19th century and served as a simple field. After 1889, it developed into a modern center with new structures and urban activity.
The Casa Caetano de Campos building from 1894 stands at the plaza and now houses the State Education Department. Visitors can observe this institution, which remains a focal point of the city's administrative and civic life.
The República metro station at the southern end connects Lines 3 and 4, providing direct access to the square from different city areas. Visitors can reach the plaza easily and explore it on foot.
Every Sunday, artisans from northern Brazil and Latin American countries gather to sell handcrafted items, art, clothing, and regional food. This weekly event brings colors and stories from different cultures to the plaza.
