Estação Ciência da Universidade de São Paulo, Science museum in Lapa district, São Paulo, Brazil
Estação Ciência of the University of São Paulo was a science museum housed in a converted factory building in the Lapa district. It presented exhibitions on physics, biology, astronomy, mathematics, meteorology, geography, and geology.
The museum opened its doors in 1987 and remained open until 2013, attracting over 400,000 visitors in its peak year of 2006. After planned renovations began in 2016, it did not reopen, and its collection was distributed to other university locations.
The institution played an important role in bringing science to the general public and received several awards for its work in science communication. Staff members designed exhibitions so that visitors could actively engage with scientific subjects.
The venue has been inaccessible to visitors since 2016 and can only be viewed from outside. The original collection is now found in other university facilities, particularly at Parque CienTec.
What made this place special was its focus on hands-on interaction, where visitors could experience scientific concepts firsthand. The practical demonstrations and experiments allowed people without background knowledge to understand science directly.
