Tendal da Lapa, Cultural center in Lapa District, São Paulo, Brazil.
Tendal da Lapa is a cultural center in the Lapa district housed in a concrete building with pre-molded elements and metal trusses. The structure features horizontal lines and several entrances designed to accommodate diverse programming and public services.
The building was constructed in 1938 by the JP Urner company as a meat storage and distribution facility for São Paulo's meat industry. It served this purpose until the 1970s before being repurposed as a public cultural space.
The center offers free theater performances, workshops, and dance classes to the community. These programs reflect how the building has transformed from its industrial past into a gathering place for local artistic expression.
The facility is accessible and houses both cultural programs and municipal services in a single location. Visitors will find multiple entrances useful for accessing different areas and activities within the center.
The building received heritage protection status in 2007 from Conpresp, recognizing its Art Deco industrial architecture from the 1930s and 1940s. This designation preserves a significant part of Lapa's overlooked industrial heritage.
