Sanatorium Padre Bento, Medical sanatorium in Guarulhos, Brazil
The Sanatorium Padre Bento extends across 90,000 square meters, containing houses, gardens, sports fields, and an Art Deco theater built in 1936.
Established in 1931 as a mental health facility, the institution transformed into a specialized center for treating Hansen's disease patients under São Paulo state management.
The on-site theater, designed by engineer Francisco Palma Travassos, provided entertainment spaces where patients participated in recreational and artistic activities.
The current hospital complex maintains 160 clinical and surgical beds, 10 emergency care units, and 9 intensive care beds serving multiple municipalities.
The facility performs 5,000 ophthalmological consultations and 120 eye surgeries monthly through the Brazilian public health system.
