Conservatório Dramático e Musical de São Paulo, Music conservatory in República District, São Paulo, Brazil
The Conservatório Dramático e Musical de São Paulo is a music conservatory in the República district of downtown São Paulo, dedicated to teaching classical music and dramatic arts. The building is now integrated into the Praça das Artes complex and contains classrooms, rehearsal spaces, and a concert hall.
The conservatory was founded in 1906 and was the first institution in São Paulo to offer advanced training in music and theater. After more than a century of activity, it closed in 2009 and was later brought back as part of the Praça das Artes project.
The building is named after an old Brazilian music institution and today forms part of a larger arts complex that brings together rehearsal rooms, concert halls, and studios. Visitors can observe students and professional artists using the space on a daily basis, giving the place an active, working feel.
The building sits in central São Paulo and is within walking distance of several subway stations. Some areas are only open during performances or scheduled events, so checking the program in advance is a good idea before planning a visit.
The poet and musicologist Mário de Andrade, one of the central figures of Brazilian modernism, taught at this school before becoming a national cultural symbol. His influence on the arts in São Paulo grew directly out of his years working within these walls.
