Vargem Grande is a residential neighborhood in western Rio de Janeiro made up of condominiums and single-family homes spread across a large area. The highest peak of the city rises here, and forested land covers significant portions of the region.
The land was once part of a colonial estate and later given to Benedictine monks, who established a farm here in the 18th century. From these early origins, the place grew into the large residential area it is today.
