Caminho do Proença, Historical trail in Magé, Brazil.
Caminho do Proença is a trail with stone paving that connects Vila Inhomirim in Magé to the Secretário district in Petrópolis while crossing the Serra da Estrela mountain range. Several waterfalls and historic churches sit along the path, serving as natural landmarks for walkers.
The trail was built in 1724 by a wealthy farmer named Bernardo Soares de Proença and cut travel time between Rio de Janeiro and Vila Rica by four days. This improvement made it an important economic route for traders and travelers.
The route forms part of Estrada Real, a network of colonial paths that linked mining regions with coastal ports for transporting gold and diamonds. This connection allowed local traders and travelers to move goods more quickly and efficiently than before.
Entry to the trail begins from Magé and follows a mountain path that requires sturdy footwear and some physical fitness. Visitors should start early and be prepared for weather changes at higher elevations.
The original pavement from 1802 with its irregular stones is still visible in several sections and shows the traditional craftsmanship of colonial times. This original surface is one of the few surviving examples of road construction from that era in the region.
