Gongo Soco, Archaeological site and preserved ruins in Barão de Cocais, Brazil

The Gongo Soco complex includes old mining structures, colonial buildings, and a cemetery spread across the mountainous terrain of Minas Gerais.

From 1826 to 1856, British investors operated this gold mine, extracting 12,887 kilograms of precious metal through advanced mining techniques.

The English Cemetery contains graves of British workers with inscriptions and detailed stone carvings that reflect 19th-century funerary traditions.

The archaeological site received protection status in 1995, preventing further destruction and preserving the remaining historical structures for research.

Within the complex stands a colonial farmhouse, complete with slave quarters, mills, granary, orchard, garden, and a private chapel.
