Mutum is a municipality in Minas Gerais in southeastern Brazil that covers a large rural area. The landscape is defined by two rivers and sits at an elevation of about 538 meters.
The region was first inhabited by Botocudo tribes until Guarani people arrived, followed by Portuguese settlers who founded the town in 1864.
The name comes from a local dark-feathered bird that was common in the area when people first settled here.
The municipality is divided into five separate districts spread across the territory. The best time to visit depends on the weather, as the region has a subtropical climate.
The territory marks the geographic transition between Rio Doce lowlands and the Serra do Caparaó mountain elevations. This location makes it a notable point for observing different landscape types in one area.
