Manuripi-Heath Amazonian Wildlife National Reserve, Nature reserve in Pando Department, Bolivia.
Manuripi-Heath is a nature reserve covering vast Amazon rainforest in northern Bolivia, shaped by rolling hills, elevated plateaus, and wide river plains. Three major river systems flow through the landscape, creating diverse habitats that support complex ecosystems throughout the region.
The reserve was officially established as a protected area in 1973 through government decree to safeguard the Amazon forest. Boundary adjustments were made in 2000 to better define the protected zone.
Local communities within the reserve maintain traditional practices of rubber extraction and Brazil nut collection, contributing to sustainable resource management.
Visitors need to arrange permits and proper supplies well in advance, as access is limited and facilities are sparse. The tropical climate brings high temperatures and substantial rainfall year-round, making weather-appropriate gear essential for any trip.
The reserve supports an extraordinary array of wildlife with several hundred bird species and numerous plant varieties, some still being scientifically documented. Researchers regularly discover fish species previously unknown to science here, making it an important site for ongoing biological research.
