Ichilo Province, Administrative province in Santa Cruz Department, Bolivia
Ichilo Province is an administrative region in Santa Cruz Department, extending across the Bolivian lowlands with a significant geographic span from northwest to southeast and southwest to northeast. It comprises four municipalities, with Buena Vista serving as the capital.
The region was established by presidential decree in 1926 and named after the Río Ichilo, which flows along its western border. This creation reflected the administrative development of the lowland areas of Santa Cruz Department.
Spanish is the dominant language, though Quechua and other indigenous languages remain part of daily life in communities. This linguistic diversity reflects the region's mixed heritage.
Travel through the province is easiest starting from Buena Vista, which serves as the administrative hub and entry point to other municipalities. The flat terrain and agricultural landscape make movement between settlements straightforward.
The region plays a surprisingly significant role in Bolivian agriculture, producing a substantial portion of rice consumed throughout the area. This intensive level of agricultural output makes it a key supply center for the larger department.
