Serra Azul State Park, State park in Barra do Garças, Brazil
Serra Azul State Park is a protected mountainous area in Mato Grosso covering 11,002 hectares with elevations ranging from 350 to 730 meters. The terrain includes caves decorated with ancient rock paintings and various natural formations across its landscape.
The park was established by State Law 6,539 in 1994 to protect archaeological sites containing ancient cave paintings. This legal protection ensured these cultural treasures would be preserved for the future.
The Bororo people named this region Kieguereiral, meaning Place of Birds, reflecting how central wildlife is to understanding the landscape today. Local communities continue to recognize the area's role as a vital habitat shaped by indigenous knowledge.
Access to paragliding ramps and guided visits requires advance permission from the State Environment Secretary. Plan your visit ahead and check current access rules before you go.
The protected area contains the geographical center of Brazil, marked by a specific point within its boundaries. This special location attracts visitors who want to stand at the heart of the country.
