Anicuns, Municipality in central Goiás, Brazil.
Anicuns is a municipality in central Goiás situated on the right bank of Rio dos Bois. It spreads across roughly 1,750 square kilometers at an elevation of 708 meters.
The settlement began during Brazil's gold rush period and transformed into an agricultural community once mining resources ran out. It gained municipality status in 1911.
The name comes from the Guanicuns Indians who hunted a local bird species and used its feathers for ornaments and ate its tongue. Stories about these early hunters are part of how local people understand their place's roots and connection to the land.
The area has basic services including hospitals and schools at different levels to support residents and visitors. Keep in mind this is a small rural municipality with limited tourist infrastructure.
The Rio dos Bois hosts the Copa Brasil de Canoagem, a national championship where paddlers compete for three days in canoe races. This yearly event brings athletes and spectators who energize the river valley.
