Federal Senate of Brazil, Legislative chamber in National Congress Palace, Brasília, Brazil
The Federal Senate sits inside one of the two domes at the Palácio do Congresso Nacional and is connected to the Chamber of Deputies by two tall office towers. The downward-facing bowl houses the plenary hall where senators hold their sessions.
The institution began its work in the 19th century during the time of the empire and later moved to the new capital. The relocation to Brasília took place when the city was inaugurated as a modern center of government.
The building is known as Congresso Nacional and was designed by Oscar Niemeyer as a symbol of the new capital. The two domes represent the two chambers of the Brazilian parliament and reflect the separation of legislative power.
Guided visits are available on all weekdays and must be booked in advance for groups. It is best to arrive early in the morning to avoid waiting and to have enough time for the tour.
The downward curve of the Senate dome contrasts with the upward curve of the Chamber of Deputies dome on the opposite side. This architectural choice symbolizes the different roles and functions of the two chambers within the legislature.
