The park spans 90,000 hectares where the Amazon rainforest meets the Cerrado biome, containing 843 oxbow lakes along the Araguaia River system.
The Tocantins state government established Cantão State Park in 1998 to protect the region's wetlands and maintain its ecological diversity.
Instituto Araguaia leads research projects and conservation initiatives while working with local communities to protect the abundant wildlife within the park boundaries.
The park maintains an 18-kilometer trail system and a visitor center, with guided tours available through local operators in the town of Caseara.
During wet seasons, the forest floods up to eight meters deep, transforming into an aquatic environment that supports 700 bird species and 300 fish species.
