Praia do Gunga, Beach in Roteiro, Brazil
Praia do Gunga is a beach located between the Atlantic Ocean and Lagoa do Roteiro, bordered by coconut palm groves. The shoreline extends for several kilometers with ocean waters on one side and calm lagoon waters on the other.
The beach remained isolated until the 1990s, when local authorities built access roads through coconut plantations to encourage tourism. This development transformed a remote location into a destination for visitors.
Fishing traditions passed down through generations remain visible here, with local boats working both ocean and lagoon waters to supply nearby restaurants with fresh catch.
To reach the beach, visitors drive about 45 minutes south from Maceió on the AL-101 highway and then follow a path through coconut farms. A vehicle is helpful for this journey since the route crosses private land and walking would be impractical.
The water colors here shift throughout the day as ocean tides mix with lagoon water, shifting between deep blue and emerald tones. This daily color play occurs because of the unusual position between two different water systems.
