Assaré, Municipality in Ceará, Brazil
Assaré is a municipality in the highlands of Ceará in northeastern Brazil, situated at about 664 meters in elevation. The town spreads across agricultural land with small rivers, palm groves, and scattered settlements.
The area remained mostly unsettled until 1775, covered with carnauba palms and streams before people began moving there. The founding marked the start of human presence in this region.
The place holds strong ties to regional poetry through Patativa do Assaré, whose verses captured how local people live and pass down their customs. His work remains part of how residents think about their land and heritage.
Visitors should check with local offices for information about road conditions and places to stay. Travel is easiest after the rainy season when roads are more accessible.
The name Assaré comes from the Tupi-Guarani language of indigenous peoples who lived in this region long before European settlement. Until 1950, the place had the longer name Assaípio de Assaré before it was shortened.
