Mombaça extends over 2,119 square kilometers of land at an elevation of 310 meters in northeastern Brazil, with a population of 43,858 residents.
The area transformed from a district of Quixeramobim in 1832 to an independent municipality in 1851, initially named Maria Pereira after the owner of a local farm.
The name Mombaça, given by Portuguese settlers, remained the popular choice among residents despite multiple official name changes throughout the municipality's history.
