Região Administrativa Norte, Administrative region in Natal, Brazil
Região Administrativa Norte is an administrative region in the northern part of Natal, Brazil, made up of seven neighborhoods: Igapó, Salinas, Potengi, Nossa Senhora da Apresentação, Lagoa Azul, Pajuçara, and Redinha. The area covers both mainland zones and neighborhoods along the Potengi River, including one that sits on a river island.
Until the 1990s, the area was sparsely settled, but rapid growth driven by informal housing and new developments continued through the 2010s. This transformed the region into one of the most populated parts of Natal.
A height limit of 7.5 meters applies across the region, which means most people live in individual houses rather than apartment buildings. Walking through the neighborhoods, this gives the streets a low, open feel that stands apart from central Natal.
Two bridges connect this part of the city to the rest of Natal: the Igapó Bridge and the Newton Navarro Bridge, both of which carry heavy daily traffic. Visitors should expect some congestion at peak hours when crossing either of these routes.
The Redinha neighborhood sits on a river island in the Potengi, making it the only neighborhood in Natal with that kind of geography. City authorities have plans to build a new municipal administrative center nearby, which would make this island location an unexpected hub for local government.
