Cape Cross, Protected headland on Skeleton Coast, Namibia
The Cape Cross Reserve spans a section of Namibian coastline where thousands of Cape fur seals gather along the Atlantic Ocean shores.
Portuguese explorer Diogo Cao erected a stone cross at this location in 1486 during his expedition to chart the western African coastline.
The original stone cross from Cape Cross, now displayed in Berlin's Deutsches Historisches Museum, represents early European navigation in southern Africa.
Visitors can observe the seal colony from designated viewing platforms between 10 AM and 5 PM, with permits available for purchase at reception.
The Cape Cross colony houses up to 210,000 Cape fur seals during peak breeding season between November and December each year.
