Twyfelfontein

The archaeological site contains over 2,500 rock engravings spread across sandstone formations, depicting animals, human figures, and geometric patterns in the desert landscape.

The rock art at Twyfelfontein dates back more than 6,000 years, with topographer Reinhard Maak first documenting these ancient carvings just before 1914.

The engravings represent the spiritual practices of hunter-gatherer communities, showing their deep connection to wildlife through depictions of elephants, rhinos, and antelopes.

Four different walking routes guide visitors through the site, with some paths allowing independent exploration while others require accompaniment by knowledgeable local guides.

The rock art includes unexpected depictions of sea lions, indicating that the ancient inhabitants traveled extensive distances to observe marine life far from their desert home.
