Lüderitz Speed Challenge, Speed sailing competition in Lüderitz, Namibia
The Lüderitz Speed Challenge is a speed sailing competition held at Namibia's coast where windsurfers and kitesurfers compete in a specially built canal. The facility uses an 800-meter (2,625 ft) artificial waterway with wooden barriers designed to reduce disturbances while athletes attempt high-speed runs.
The competition started in 2007 and gained international attention when Sebastien Cattelan broke the 50-knot barrier in 2008. Since then, it has become an established venue for international record attempts in the sport.
The World Sailing Speed Record Council maintains strict regulations and officiates all record attempts during the annual competition in Lüderitz.
The competition takes place mainly between October and November when strong winds create the best conditions for peak performance. Visitors should prepare for challenging weather and be ready for changing conditions throughout the event.
The World Sailing Speed Record Council enforces strict regulations that require precise measurement and timing for every record attempt. This makes even minor differences in wind strength or water conditions measurable and officially recorded.
