Jacob Gitlin Library, Jewish studies library in Gardens, Cape Town, South Africa.
Jacob Gitlin Library is a collection of more than 50,000 volumes focused on Jewish literature, history, and learning materials. The holdings are published in Hebrew and English and also include music recordings featuring Jewish folk songs and Klezmer compositions.
The facility was founded in 1959 under the South African Zionist Federation and named after someone who arrived from Lithuania in 1902. This person shaped the early Zionist movement in Cape Town.
The collection shows how Jewish culture has been lived in South Africa through everyday objects and records. Music, books, and personal documents tell the story of people who brought their traditions here and kept them alive.
The library is located in the Gardens area and sits within a community center where many visitors can walk around. The collection welcomes everyone interested in learning about Jewish studies.
A major focus of the collection is hundreds of newspaper clippings and magazine items that document Jewish events and issues in South Africa. These articles show how the community evolved over the decades.
