Petrified forest, Khorixas

The Petrified Forest spans across an arid landscape with numerous fossilized tree trunks scattered throughout the protected geological site near Khorixas.

The forest contains tree remains from 280 million years ago during the Permian period, when massive floods transported the trees before their mineralization process began.

The Damara people, who have resided in this region for generations, incorporate the petrified forest into their traditional narratives and knowledge systems.

Located 42 kilometers west of Khorixas on the C39 road, the site offers guided tours and educational signs explaining the geological formation process.

Two primary petrified tree trunks measuring 45 meters in length remain intact, while hundreds of smaller fragments lay preserved across the grounds.
