Hydrogen Intensity and Real-time Analysis eXperiment, Radio telescope array in Karoo region, South Africa

The HIRAX telescope array consists of 1024 parabolic reflectors measuring 6 meters in diameter, spread across 28,000 square meters of land.

The construction of HIRAX began with an 8-element prototype at Hartebeesthoek Radio Astronomy Observatory in 2017, leading to a planned 128-element pathfinder array in 2024.

Scientists and researchers from South Africa, the United States, and Canada collaborate at HIRAX to study astronomical phenomena and advance cosmological understanding.

The telescope operates between 400 and 800 MHz frequency ranges, capturing data about redshifted 21-cm hydrogen line emission from distant galaxy clusters.

The fixed parabolic dishes of HIRAX utilize Earth's rotation to survey the sky, enabling efficient coverage without mechanical steering mechanisms.
