Goukamma Marine Protected Area, Marine protected area on Western Cape coastline, South Africa
Goukamma Marine Protected Area extends along the Western Cape coast and encompasses a coastal marine region with diverse underwater habitats. The zone stretches from Buffels Bay to Platbank and protects breeding grounds and feeding areas for various sea creatures.
The government designated this marine conservation zone in 1990 and confirmed its official status in 2000. The establishment reflected growing recognition of protecting this important coastal region.
The coastline holds scattered remains of shell middens and pottery from Khoi-san peoples who inhabited this region long ago. These traces show how communities once made their living from these waters and shores.
Access is easiest from Buffels Bay, where parking and coastal viewpoints are located for observing wildlife. Conditions change with seasons, with winter offering the best opportunity to spot migrating whales.
The protected waters hold more than 160 seaweed species and serve as breeding grounds for fish whose populations naturally spill into surrounding fishing areas. This natural source replenishes fish stocks far beyond the zone itself.
