Makhanda, University town in Eastern Cape, South Africa
Makhanda lies on the slopes of the Suur Mountains at an elevation of 580 meters, near the source of the Kowie River.
Colonel John Graham established this military outpost in 1812 to secure the eastern frontier of the Cape Colony during the British-Xhosa conflicts.
The National Arts Festival takes place annually in Makhanda, presenting theater performances, music concerts, art exhibitions, and dance shows from across South Africa.
Rhodes University offers undergraduate and graduate programs to students from various countries, with facilities spread throughout the central area of Makhanda.
